Make
it a family project…
Start
a tradition....Recycling is a great way to involve the whole
family in a joint project that can save you time and money
and is also good for the environment. Making recycling a part
of your family's way of life not only helps your budget and
your community, but it also instills these same values in
the next generation creating good earth stewards for the future.
Make recycling a family tradition!

did you know?
Reduce
- Reduce the amount of trash your household--and you personally--generate.
How? Here's some easy ways:
-
Buy products with less packaging (ask local grocery stores
to carry refill products for detergents and other common
household items, and look for and support manufacturers
who offer this earth-friendly option.
-
Carry travel mugs for on-the-go coffees and sodas to reduce
the paper cups you buy each day.
-
Cancel unwanted catalogs and other junk mail that enters
your home (you'll save time too by not having to process
it each day).
Reuse
- For what you can't reduce, find clever ways to reuse products
and packaging. Here's just a few tips:
-
Wash and reuse plastic to-go containers from restaurants.
Those with snap-on lids are great for taking lunches
to school and work. These also have a variety of
uses around the house, including user-friendly containers
for painting or other projects, storage containers for
arts and crafts or hardware items, etc.
- Reuse
newspapers as dropclothes for painting and other projects,
and crumple it in shipping boxes for padding.
- Reuse
single-sided paper from copiers and printers by turning
it over and running it through again, or save it for scratch
paper around the house and drawing paper for the kids.
Recycle
- If you can't reduce it or reuse it, then recycle it rather
than putting it into the waste stream via the trash. Today
a wide variety of products are recyclable almost everywhere,
including aluminum, paper, cardboard, glass, many plastics,
etc. See the What/Where Guide to Recycling
page for more details on what can be recycle where in
South Portland. Voluntary

How
do our dual-compartment trucks work?
In the video below, you can see that, after
the truck collects and empties the garbage
cart, the separator on the inside of the truck
flips over so the recycling cart's contents
are dumped into another section of the truck.

to Recycling for Small Businesses
Automated
curbside recyling, for residential auto rubbish
customers, began on
JULY 8, 2008, in South Portland. At the same
time, the residential, automated rubbish collection,
along with the new recycling system were both
contracted to Pine Tree Waste, Inc.
Pinetree,
utilizing a "split" rubbish packer
(truck), collects both automated containers.
One side of the truck holds refuse and the
other holds recycleable materials. Therefore,
both refuse & recycling can be & are
emptied into the same truck, with the driver/operator
designating which side to empty each container
to. GREEN goes
to the refuse side and BLUE
goes to the recycleables side.
